Plant Profiles introduction
There are thousands upon thousands of plants that you can choose from when developing your food forest. Mind you, plants are suited to particular climates; temperate, tropical, Arid, Cold etc, so you have to choose plants that grow in your local climate. Nanaimo and much of the populated areas on Vancouver Island has a temperate climate. Here is a list of 7 plants that grow in our Temperate Climate. common name and its scientific name, -Knowing the scientific name will help you when you are looking for plants in the plant nurseries.
height-width: The hieght and width of the plant is important because thsi will inform you how much space you will need in your forest to locate your plant
needs - soil conditions, watering needs
nutritional information of food it produces.
Other uses - of plant: medicinal, buildling material
pest resistance/susceptibility
other information that you will be interested in is:
What time of year the plant produces fruit- this way you can develop a forest that produces food all year round
When plant produces flowers - the more flowers there are year round, the more bees will stay to pollinate your crops
